Liquid Soap for Newborns

The main stars of the article that I recommend today are Larissa Habib Mendonça Gois Topan, Vânia Oliveira Carvalho and Kerstin Taniguchi Abagge.

The researchers from Curitiba have just published an unprecedented work regarding changes in the skin of newborns after the first bath using 2 different soaps:

Formula 1: Water, coconut glucoside, cocoamidopropyl betaine, acrylate/C10–30 alkyl acrylate crosspolymer, sodium benzoate, glyceryl oleate, p-anisic acid, sodium hydroxide, phenoxyethanol, perfume, and citric acid.

pH 5.86

Formula 2: SLS or sodium laureth sulfate (SLES), cocamide DEA or cocamide diethanolamine, cocoamidopropyl betaine, citric acid, methyl chloroisothiazolinone, sodium hydrochloride, ethylene glycol stearate, fragrance, glycerin, linalool, and water.

pH 7.0

Parameters such as pH, skin peeling, erythema and hydration were evaluated.

Soap with a pH of 5.86 caused less erythema, less dryness, scaling and less change in the physiological pH of the skin, when compared to common liquid soap (pH 7,00)

I honestly, looking close to the composition of the soap at pH 7.0, would never recommend it for a baby, specially fot a newborn, as substances known to be irritating and sensitizing are present in the composition, such as the surfactant sodium laureth sulfate and the preservative methylchloroisothiazolinone.

A very cool work that is worth reading, a good example for medical prescriptions and specific formulations for hospitals to use in newborns.

Below is my contribution for anyone who wants to prepare a cleansing foam with a pH of 5.86

Amisoft ECS-22........................5%

Cocamido propyl betaine...........5%

Glycerin....................................5%

Spectrastat...........................0.8%

Citric acid pH 5.86

Water ..................................100%

Pack in foam packaging

Hugs and have a great week!
